Two suspected poachers were electrocuted after they got entangled with live power cables set up as a trap to catch wild animals in a mango orchard abutting Koundinya Wildlife Sanctuary at Bandladoddi village in Bangarupalem mandal. The incident came to light on Monday evening.
According to Bangarupalem police, unidentified persons had laid power cables in the orchard to hunt wild boars and antelopes. The victims, identified as Govindappa (32) and Kutti (32), residents of the same village, ventured into the fields on Sunday night carrying a torchlight and iron rods for hunting. The duo reportedly failed to notice the electric trap and were killed on the spot.
The next day, local farmers identified the bodies and informed the police. The police and the forest officials reached the spot and conducted an inspection. Police seized the torchlight and iron rods from the scene and shifted the bodies to the Bangarupalem Government Hospital for post-mortem. Incidentally, the police and forest officials found a wild boar lying dead, possibly due to electrocution, a short distance away.
A case has been registered, and a special party was formed to identify those responsible for setting up the electric traps.
