Two persons were rescued while another went missing after an unexpected swell in the Pathankayam river near Kodenchery in Kozhikode district on Saturday (June 27).
The incident occurred in the evening when they entered the river to take a bath. Police sources said the water level rose suddenly following heavy rainfall in the upstream catchment areas, triggering a flash flood that caught the victims unawares.
Residents and Fire and Rescue Services personnel launched a rescue operation soon after the incident. Two persons were pulled out of the river and brought to safety.
Search operations are on to trace the missing person despite the adverse weather and the swollen river.
Meanwhile, the district administration urged people to stay away from rivers, streams, and waterfalls during the monsoon, warning that heavy rainfall in upstream areas could cause sudden surges in water levels even when there is no rain.
