Two residents sustained minor injuries from pellets fired at a buffalo that escaped from a slaughterhouse and ran amok at Panamaram in Wayanad on Sunday (June 8, 2025). Police sources said the incident took place in the morning when a Forest department squad was attempting to shoot down the animal.

“The stray pellets hit unintended targets amid the large crowd of onlookers at the scene. No one sustained serious injuries, and no case was registered as there were no written complaints,” said a police officer from Panamaram station. He added that the injured who sought treatment at a private hospital were discharged within a few hours.

Sources said the two, Kappumkunnu Jaleel and Kulivayal Jassim, sustained pellet injuries to the stomach and face. They were reportedly watching the squad’s attempt to capture the buffalo that had run amok for hours.

The decision to shoot the terrified animal was taken after all other rescue efforts failed to control it. A forest officer also sustained minor injuries during the animal’s attack.
