Two youths were arrested by Arakkonam Taluk police for possession of 9,811 narcotic tablets (Tapentadol) in a dilapidated building in Thanigai Polur village near Arakkonam town in Ranipet on Thursday.

The arrested persons were identified as K. Sujan Kumar, 23, a resident of Thoraipakkam in Chennai, and V. Elangovan, 24, a resident of Villivakkam. An initial inquiry revealed that, following a tip-off to Ranipet SP P. Sibin, special teams were formed to conduct surprise checks at public places such as bus termini and railway stations, as well as isolated buildings in the district.

Accordingly, a special police team was conducting a routine check near Arakkonam town when the team got an alert about the suspects camping in the building for the past few days. The team rushed to the village.

Police said that the investigation found the duo had placed an order for tablets with pharmacies in Mumbai. The tablets were sent to them by couriers. Police have been tracking the mobile phones of suspects involved in the crime before they cornered them near the town. A case was registered. Arrested persons were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. Further probe is under way.
