Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is set to make history this Diwali as preparations begin for a world-record rangoli at the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple. Covering approximately 50,000 square feet, the rangoli is part of the five-day Deepotsav celebrations. 

The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Mahakala, is renowned for its Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam that faces south, a rare feature among the twelve Jyotirlingas.

The Deepotsav festivities include lighting thousands of diyas and performing special aartis to honour Lord Mahakal, a manifestation of Shiva. The massive rangoli reflects both devotion and artistic heritage, drawing thousands of devotees and tourists eager to witness the spiritual spectacle. The temple is illuminated with vibrant lights, making it a centre of culture and faith during the festival.

Meanwhile, Ayodhya is preparing for its grand Deepotsav celebrations, beginning several days before October 20, the main day of Diwali. Over 29 lakh diyas will light up the ghats of the sacred Saryu River, aiming to break world records. The festivities include Ram Leela reenactments, cultural performances, and aartis, particularly around Ram Ki Paidi and the Ram Mandir, celebrating Lord Ram’s return after defeating Ravana.
