The University of Massachusetts Boston went on high alert Thursday afternoon following reports of possible gunfire on campus. An alert posted on the university’s homepage described a “police incident" near the Campus Center, urging students and staff to avoid the area.

Earlier, the university issued a more specific warning regarding a public safety threat in or near the Residence Hall East Building, advising everyone to stay clear of the vicinity.

“Troopers have responded to UMass Boston to an unconfirmed report of a shooting on campus. Law enforcement will coordinate with our campus partners to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff," said the Massachusetts State Police in a statement.

Videos showing police vehicles reporting on the campus have been doing rounds on social media.

Local media outlet WCVB reported that shots may have been fired around 3:45 PM near 240 Morrissey Boulevard, the location of the UMass Boston campus in Dorchester. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the incident.

Authorities are continuing to investigate. More updates are expected as information becomes available.
