Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan held a high-level meeting with senior police and administrative officials of West Bengal in Kolkata on Sunday. Mohan, who was in the city with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to inaugurate the Central Forensic Laboratory, conducted a detailed review meeting with top state officials on the sidelines of the inauguration.

According to sources, given the prevailing political situation in neighbouring Bangladesh, the meeting was significant. Apart from Mohan and other senior bureaucrats, those representing the state were Chief Secretary Manoj Panth, Home Secretary, Director General of Police, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, and other senior officers.

The key focus of the meeting was the issue of fencing along the India-Bangladesh border, with discussions highlighting the urgent need to complete fencing in various border areas.

Sources revealed that special emphasis was laid on expediting the handover of land required for the fencing project. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs is providing financial support to the state government for acquiring the necessary land.

Efforts are currently underway to ensure that funds for land acquisition are disbursed promptly, enabling fencing work to progress without delay.

At present, around 520 kilometers of the international border remain unfenced. Many of these stretches are located in riverine and remote areas, including parts of the Sundarbans. The Union Home Ministry is actively drafting a comprehensive plan to address fencing challenges in such regions.

The state government has also submitted its own proposals for managing fencing in riverine zones. According to sources, the Union Home Secretary assured that the central plan will be shared with the state authorities soon.
