A police officer from the Uttar Pradesh Police was suspended from his post after a video showing him kicking a complainant in Sonbhadra district went viral on social media. The officer, along with his team, had been called to help resolve a land-related dispute when the incident took place.
The video shows an elderly man named Ramesh, who appeared visibly injured, touching a cop’s feet. It seemed as though he was pleading for protection from his nephew, identified as Ramdhani, who had allegedly attacked him over a property dispute.
According to officials, Ramdhani had entered his uncle’s house and tried to attack him with an axe amid the ongoing dispute. Ramesh sustained a minor neck injury, after which his family called the police to file a complaint.
As officers reached the spot, tensions escalated when a man began recording the scene on his phone, saying, “Honest people are being oppressed." At that moment, another cop, identified as Abhishek Kumar, was seen in the footage violently kicking in the direction of the camera.
The video quickly went viral after being shared widely across social media, with users demanding strict action against the officer. The Sonbhadra Police later issued a statement confirming that disciplinary measures had been taken.
Rajesh Kumar Rai, the Circle Officer of Dudhi, Sonbhadra, released a video statement on X, confirming the officer’s suspension. “A viral video from the Vindhamganj police station area showing a police officer misbehaving with an elderly man has prompted action, with the officer suspended by the Superintendent of Police," Rai said. He added that a detailed inquiry into the incident has been ordered and further action will be taken based on its findings.
