Go-LX, a new cow protection platform announced by Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, aims to create a nationwide network to “save indigenous cows from slaughter" through licensed adoption, crowdfunding, and constituency-level Gau Dhams across India.

Speaking during his ongoing cow protection yatra, the Shankaracharya said the proposed digital platform would function differently from commercial livestock marketplaces, stressing that “only cows will be bought, not sold."

Inspired by the easy-to-use format of OLX, the platform will allow farmers or cattle owners to list indigenous cows that they are unable to maintain. The organisation or interested individuals would then step forward to financially support and take responsibility for those cows. However, the Shankaracharya repeatedly emphasised that the initiative should not be viewed as a commercial transaction.

“We are not traders. The idea is not that cows are commodities to be bought and sold. The concept is that if someone cannot keep a cow, another person should step forward to protect and serve it," he said.

According to him, only Indian-origin indigenous cow breeds will be included under the initiative, while foreign breeds will not be accepted. The service is expected to be integrated into the already existing platform before a dedicated app is launched in the coming weeks. Explaining the concept behind the name “Go-LX", the Shankaracharya said the term was chosen because younger generations are already familiar with the OLX-style process, making it easier to communicate the initiative’s purpose.

The platform will operate on three key principles — protection-oriented transfer of cows, crowd-funded support, and a monitored licensing system for caretakers. The Shankaracharya said cows registered on the platform cannot later be sold onwards, and people willing to keep cows at home will receive a “Gau Palan License" from the Jyotish Peeth after signing a service agreement. Under the agreement, caretakers will have to ensure proper care of the animal and return the cow to the organisation if they are unable to continue the service.

Since the organisation does not have a dedicated financial corpus, the initiative will also rely heavily on crowdfunding. Multiple individuals will be allowed to jointly support one cow’s upkeep, including fodder, shelter, and medical care. “We are not wealthy people. We only have determination," the Shankaracharya said, adding that several people had already approached the organisation offering support for cow protection.

One of the most ambitious aspects of the initiative is the proposal to establish “Gau Dhams" across all 4,123 Assembly constituencies in India. The Shankaracharya said transporting cows from across the country to one central location would be impractical, and therefore state-wise units and local shelters would be created so that cows remain within their own regions. “Each Assembly constituency will eventually have an ideal Gau Dham. A centralised team will prepare SOPs and monitor operations. The original caretaker or donor will also be able to visit and serve the cow," he said.

The organisation also plans to periodically inspect cows that are taken home under the licensing system to ensure their safety, health, and proper care. The Shankaracharya clarified that the initiative would not be limited to old or abandoned cows alone, saying the objective was to prevent indigenous cattle from ending up in slaughterhouses regardless of age or condition.

Under the proposed funding model, potential supporters will be shown details of cows needing rescue, including their estimated upkeep cost. Interested individuals or groups can then collectively contribute to protect that animal. “If a person wants to keep the cow personally, they can. Otherwise, the cow will remain in our Gau Dham, and updates about its condition will be shared online," he added.

The Shankaracharya also said the campaign was intended to counter what he described as a growing narrative that Hindus are increasingly selling cows for livelihood reasons. “Our objective is not to gather cows in one place. The objective is to save them from slaughter," he said. He maintained that the platform would not restrict participation only to his organisation, and any “Sanatani" willing to care for cows could become part of the network after signing the prescribed agreement.
