A man has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh after he was allegedly caught on camera brutally assaulting his two-and-a-half-year-old daughter and attempting to drown her in a roadside drain.
The incident, which took place in Sultanpur on Saturday, came to light after a video of the assault went viral on social media. Police launched an investigation after the video surfaced online and subsequently arrested the accused, Monu alias Yogendra Singh (50).
In the viral footage, Singh can allegedly be seen kicking and punching the toddler. He is also seen repeatedly forcing the child into a roadside drain, allegedly attempting to drown her. The child can be heard screaming during the ordeal.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 2.30 pm on May 30. The video was later shared in a WhatsApp group, following which officers took cognisance of the matter and initiated action.
Police said some local residents intervened and attempted to rescue the child. During the commotion, Singh allegedly became aggressive and tried to force open the door of a nearby house, causing panic among residents.
Based on the viral video and other evidence, police registered a case against Singh under relevant provisions of law. He was later produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
