BIJNOR: An IAS aspirant and MTech degree holder from IIT Kanpur allegedly died by suicide by jumping into the Ganga after coming out of her home for a morning walk on Monday. Lalita Singh, 24, had been under immense stress after she could not clear the civil services examination in her third attempt this year, said her father, Ved Prakash.The incident happened around 6:30 am. Lalita arrived at the Ganga Barrage with her 13-year-old cousin sister. After instructing the cousin to wait at Gate No. 24, Lalita suddenly jumped into the river. Passersby gathered after her cousin raised an alarm. Police and divers immediately launched a search and rescue operation, but could not find her till evening.Bijnor (city) SHO Dharmendra Solanki said, "The incident happened in an area under Muzaffarnagar district.
A joint team is searching for her."Ved Prakash, a revenue clerk in Chandpur tehsil, said, "I, along with my wife, had gone to Lucknow to meet our son, a scientist, and were travelling back home by train when I received a call from my niece on Monday morning, informing me that Lalita had jumped into the Ganga. After reaching Bijnor, I rushed to the barrage. Local police and divers were searching for her. I requested the authorities concerned to call a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
""She did BSc from Vardhman College in Bijnor and then completed MTech in computer science from IIT Kanpur in 2022. She used to go out for a morning walk with her cousin every day. On Monday, they went out as usual, but instead took a bus to the Ganga Barrage, 12 km from our house in Bijnor city," said Prakash."Lalita was the eldest among four siblings. One of my two sons is a scientist in Lucknow while the other is an engineer. My other daughter is studying in college," said Prakash.
