The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) on Saturday announced that a 10% surcharge will be imposed on electricity bills from June, a move that will affect consumers across all categories in the state.
In an official notification, the UPPCL said it will impose a 10% Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS) calculated for the month of March 2026, which will be charged in June. “I have been directed to request you to implement the sarite for all categories of consumers as per the provisions of the regulation," it read.
The move came after the introduction of new regulations by the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) under the Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) framework, under which power distribution companies are permitted to levy FPPAS to recover fluctuations in fuel and power purchase costs.
“As per the regulation, any extra power purchase and transmission costs incurred in a given month are recovered after a delay of three months. This means the additional cost incurred in March 2026 will be recovered from consumers in June 2026," said Pankaj Saxena, the Chief Engineer of the Regulatory Affairs Unit (RAU).
How Will It Impact Consumers?
The additional 10% surcharge means that consumers in Uttar Pradesh will have to pay an additional charge on their electricity bills for June to help power utilities recover higher fuel and power procurement costs.
The surcharge will affect all consumer categories, including domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural users. The impact will vary depending on electricity usage: A household with a monthly bill of Rs 1,000 will have to pay Rs 100 extra.
The surcharge came at a time when households are already facing mounting pressure due to higher fuel expenses. Petrol and diesel prices increased by almost Rs 7 per litre in the span of two weeks by the OMCs amid the elevated crude oil prices due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
The latest hike pushed petrol prices to Rs 102.12 in New Delhi, Rs 111.18 in Hyderabad and Rs 113.47 in Kolkata. Chandigarh continued to have the lowest petrol price among the listed cities at Rs 98.10 per litre.
