Urgent Call for Better Hygiene and Safety in Ranchi's Municipal Shelter Homes

Ranchi: As temperatures begin to drop, dwellers of the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) shelter homes have raised concerns about unhygienic conditions, inadequate cleaning, and a lack of basic amenities. While the shelters serve as an essential refuge for the homeless especially during winter, occupants say improved facilities and maintenance could make their stay safer and more comfortable. At several sites, residents highlighted issues such as unclean washrooms, limited water availability, and old bedding.“We are thankful that the corporation provides a roof over our heads, but the rooms are often cramped and cleanliness needs more attention,” said Ram Awdesh from the Khadgada Bus Stand shelter.Another resident staying at the Doranda shelter added, “The water often looks dirty, and many of us fall sick. The mattresses also need replacement.”At the Upper Bazar shelter home, some residents also raised safety concerns. “A few theft incidents have happened in the past. We feel safe when security guards are around, but at night it becomes a worry,” said Nirmal Singh, an occupant.RMC operates 10 shelter homes, including at Khadgada Bus Stand (for men and women), Dhurwa Bus Stand, AG More Doranda, Madhukam Chuna Bhatta, RIMS Campus, Bakri Bazar, Karbala Chowk, Jagannathpur Mandir, and ITI Bus Stand.

RMC commissioner Sushant Gaurav said, “The civic body is aware of these issues and has planned a comprehensive upgrade before peak winter. We have reviewed all shelter homes and directed teams to make them more livable. A fresh coat of paint, replacement of mattresses, better lighting, and regular cleaning will be ensured. We are also addressing clean water supply and minor repairs wherever required.”“RMC is considering deploying additional caretakers and enhancing capacity at high-demand shelters. Our goal is to provide safe, clean, and humane spaces to all, who depend on these shelters,” he stressed.
