US government's transition to ChatGPT from Anthropic starts, read memo

The US government has started moving away from Anthropic’s artificial intelligence tools after President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to stop working with the company.

According to officials and a memo seen by Reuters, several departments are ending their use of Anthropic’s Claude platform and shifting to rival OpenAI’s technology. The move follows a dispute between the US Department of War and Anthropic over AI guardrails and national security concerns. The decision affects multiple agencies, with some already confirming the transition and others expected to phase out the technology over the coming months.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on X (formerly Twitter) that the department is terminating all use of Anthropic products, including Claude. William Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, also said his agency, along with mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, is ending use of Anthropic tools.The US State Department is also making changes. According to a memo reviewed by Reuters, the department will switch the AI model powering its internal chatbot, StateChat, from Anthropic to OpenAI.

“For now, StateChat will use GPT4.1 from OpenAI,” the memo said, adding that more details will be shared later.

What triggered stopping the use of Anthropic’s technology

Both the representatives shared Trump’s post while announcing the termination of the use of Anthropic’s technology.
