India on Wednesday reiterated that its energy import policies are driven solely by the objective of protecting consumer interests and ensuring stable energy supplies, even as discussions with the United States continue to deepen bilateral energy cooperation.

Responding to media queries on India’s energy sourcing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that New Delhi has been steadily expanding its energy procurement from the United States over the past decade. “Where the US is concerned, we have for many years sought to expand our energy procurement. This has steadily progressed in the last decade. The current administration has shown interest in deepening energy cooperation with India. Discussions are ongoing," he said.

Jaiswal underlined that India, as a major importer of oil and gas, follows a policy guided by national interest and consumer welfare. “It has been our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario. Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective," he added.

The spokesperson stressed that India’s energy strategy aims to ensure both stability in prices and security of supplies. “Ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies have been the twin goals of our energy policy. This includes broad-basing our energy sourcing and diversifying as appropriate to meet market conditions," Jaiswal said.

His remarks come in the backdrop of recent comments by US President Donald Trump claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged to halt Russian oil purchases. India’s response effectively reaffirmed its longstanding position — that its energy decisions are independent and based on economic and strategic realities, not external pressure.

India-Russia Partnership A Stabilising Force: Russian Envoy

Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov described the India-Russia strategic partnership as a “stabilizing force in global affairs," built on mutual trust and shared interests. Speaking at a public forum earlier in the day, Alipov said, “One-third of India’s crude oil purchases come from Russia. We are the cost-effective option."

He criticised the use of sanctions and tariffs by Western nations, calling them attempts to resist the emergence of a multipolar world. “Such measures only highlight the reluctance to accept the changing global order and delay overdue reform of international governance structures," he said.

Alipov also voiced support for normalisation of India-China relations and noted the growing global interest in BRICS, underscoring that many countries are keen to join the grouping.
