US-Israel-Iran War News Live, Ceasefire Updates: US President Donald Trump has said that Iran was “dying to make a deal” to end the now paused war and virtually ruled out resuming air strikes.
Trump’s remarks during a media interaction at the Oval Office came at a time when Iran threatened fresh strikes if the US resumed the war which has been paused since the warring sides agreed to a ceasefire on April 8.
“I don’t know that we need it,” Trump said to a question on whether he was getting “antsy to break the ceasefire”.
Meanwhile, the 60-day deadline under the War Powers Resolution of 1973 for the United States’ military campaign against Iran ends today, setting up a critical moment for Trump on whether to halt operations or seek congressional approval.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers on Thursday that the ongoing ceasefire with Iran changes how the law should be read. “We are in a ceasefire right now, which in our understanding means the 60-day clock pauses or stops in a ceasefire,” he said during testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Peace talks between the US and Iran have moved from Pakistan to the telephone. While Trump claims negotiations have “come a long way,” his recent social media warnings for Iran to “get smart” seemingly do not suggest the same. Pakistan prepares to receive a revised Iranian peace proposal this Friday.
