Indian men’s doubles duo Anirudh Chandrasekar and Vijay Prashanth produced a stirring comeback to move into the second round of the US Open on Friday, upsetting eighth-seeded American pair Christian Harrison and Evan King in a three-set battle.
The unseeded Indians held their nerve after dropping the first set to complete a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory in one hour and 42 minutes. The win was built on a much stronger serving display, as Chandrasekar and Prashanth consistently outperformed their higher-ranked opponents on both first and second serves.
With the upset win, Chandrasekar and Prashanth set up a second-round clash against the experienced pairing of John-Patrick Smith of Australia and Fernando Romboli of Brazil.
The Australian-Brazilian duo will pose a different test, with Smith known for his doubles consistency on the ATP Tour and Romboli bringing clay-court versatility.
Mixed day for Indian doubles
It was not all good news for India in New York. Another men’s doubles pair, Rithvik Bollipalli and N. Sriram Balaji, suffered a heartbreaking defeat in their opening match.
The Indians pushed Bart Stevens of the Netherlands and Vasil Kirkov of the USA to the limit before going down 6-3, 6-7(10), 4-6 in a match that lasted over two hours.
After saving multiple match points in the second-set tie-break, Bollipalli and Balaji forced a decider but could not sustain their momentum.
