Police body camera footage has revealed the shocking conditions inside the Connecticut home where the body of retired Bridgeport detective Mary Notarangelo, 73, was found more than seven months after she was reported missing.

The Glastonbury Police Department released the video and photos following a Freedom of Information request, CT Insider reported. The footage, most of it recorded during a welfare check on July 2024, shows officers struggling to enter the home due to mounds of trash pressed against the door from inside.

Garbage, cans, bottles, old furniture and used toilet paper were piled so high that firefighters had to remove the front door, only to find debris stacked well above the doorframe.

Inside, there were no clear paths through the house. The garbage reached the ceilings in some areas, with officers seen wading through piles, unsure how anyone could have moved around inside.

One officer is heard saying, “I got a cat!" as a surviving animal was found amid the chaos. Police later discovered dead birds, mice, and bird cages, but the cat was the only living creature.

Notarangelo, who had been missing since June 2024, was found dead in February 2025, buried under debris near the front door.

Police said multiple searches were carried out after the initial welfare check, but the extreme hoarding conditions made access almost impossible. A cadaver dog, drone, and specialists from the state’s environmental agency were brought in, along with a biohazard waste team.

It wasn’t until a second cleanup attempt in February, using an excavator, that her remains were found.

In the July video, a friend who had reported Notarangelo missing told police he had last received a message from her on 12 June, saying she had fallen and was experiencing vomiting and abdominal pain. He also said bird seed deliveries were left outside, noting that she would never neglect her birds.

Chief Medical Examiner staff said the cause and manner of death remain undetermined.

Notarangelo had served with the Bridgeport Police Department from 1985 to 1996. She was promoted to detective in 1992 and later to sergeant before retiring on disability after an on-duty crash.
