US President Donald Trump on Tuesday posthumously awarded conservative activist Charlie Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
At the ceremony, Trump said Kirk was an “amazing person" who was “way, way beyond his years." He said: “Charlie is attaining a far more important milestone. We are entering his name forever into the eternal roster of true American heroes. He’s a true American hero."
“Every single day of this administration, we will continue to carry out the mission for which he lived… In Charlie Kirk’s honour, we will continue, like we have been, to Fight, Fight, Fight—and to WIN, WIN, WIN. We’re gonna win SO MUCH," he added.
During the event, Kirk’s wife Erika Kirk, dressed in black, accepted the medal on her husband’s behalf. “Thank you, Mr. President, for honoring my husband in such a profound and meaningful way. Your support of our family and the work that Charlie devoted his life to will be something I cherish forever," she told Trump.
According to CNN, Erika was named CEO of Turning Point USA, the organization Charlie Kirk led, after her husband’s assassination.
“You are living proof that his mission did not die with him. It lives through you," she told members of the organisation.
Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old right-wing commentator, was shot dead on September 10 during a university event in Utah. Known for his outspoken views on gun control and women’s issues, his death drew thousands to his funeral including Musk and US President Donald Trump.
The activist’s statement—“I think it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights"—went viral after he was killed in cold blood by 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. Robinson, 22, is accused of firing a single bullet from a rooftop, fatally hitting Kirk in the neck in front of thousands of people.
Recently, the Republicans introduced a new Bill that seeks to honour the activist by minting 4,00,000 commemorative silver coins with his image.
The Bill, led by Alexander Hamadeh and August Pfluger, proposes the creation of the dollar coins through the US Mint with Kirk’s image. According to a report by Fox News Digital, the reverse of the coin will bear the phrase “Well done, good and faithful servant", along with other standard inscriptions such as “In God We Trust" and “E Pluribus Unum".
The coin will place Kirk in the ranks of historical figures such as Dwight D Eisenhower and Susan B Anthony, both of whom have been honoured on US currency.
