The United States has released footage showing its strikes on Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar positions, on Friday. The operation followed, according to United States Central Command, a drone attack launched by Tehran on a Singapore-flagged cargo ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the escalation, a ceasefire remains in effect between the two sides as negotiations continue over a binding agreement aimed at ending the conflict in West Asia.

United States Central Command said US aircraft conducted the strikes in retaliation for Iran’s attack on the M/V Ever Lovely on June 25, when a one-way attack drone struck the upper deck of the vessel as it exited the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast. The command, based in Tampa, Florida, stated the precise location of the strikes was not disclosed.

In a separate account, Iranian state television, citing a reporter in Sirik, reported an explosion late Friday at Taherouyeh pier in the southern port city and quoted a military source as saying it resulted from a projectile impact.

Describing the action as a “powerful response," United States Central Command said the strikes were in reaction to what it called unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping that “clearly violated the ceasefire." It added, “Iran’s dangerous behaviour undermined freedom of navigation as commerce increasingly flows through the vital international trade corridor."

Donald Trump described the Iranian drone strike as a “foolish" breach of the ceasefire, noting that one drone hit the vessel’s upper deck while three others were intercepted. JD Vance also issued a warning to Tehran, stating, “Iran signed a ceasefire agreement. We have honoured it. If they have disagreements about how the MOU is being applied, they can pick up the phone. But violence will be met with violence," he posted on X.

Following the US strikes, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had carried out retaliatory actions against American positions in the Gulf region, warning that further aggression would be met with a broader response.

“If the aggression is repeated, our response will be broader than this," the Guards said in a statement carried by Iranian state television on Telegram.

A ceasefire between the US and Iran came into effect on April 8, though sporadic violence has continued. Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a 14-point agreement on June 17 calling for an immediate halt to military operations, including in Lebanon, and committing both sides to a final settlement within 60 days, with initial talks held in Switzerland earlier this month.
