The office of Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who is also the Chancellor of the University of Calicut (CU), has issued a notification for the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor (V-C) for the institution.

The notification issued on Monday (November 3) says that “distinguished academics, possessing the highest level of competence, integrity, morals and institutional commitment” shall apply for the post. The appointment is subject to Section 10 of the Calicut University Act, 1975, and in terms of the Regulation 7.3 (i),(ii), and (iii) of the University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and Other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations, 2018. They shall have 10 years of experience as a Professor in a university or 10 years of experience in a reputed research and or academic administrative organisation with proof of having demonstrated academic leadership as on this date. Details are available on the university website. Signed applications along with other documents shall be sent to the Deputy Secretary, Kerala Raj Bhavan, Kerala Governor’s Camp P.O., Thiruvananthapuram, 695099, before 5 p.m. on December 5. A scanned copy of the application in PDF format shall be sent to [email protected]

This comes a day after Mr. Arlekar set up a search-cum-selection committee to select the new V-C. Eluvathingal D. Jemmis, National Science Chair professor, Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, is the Chancellor’s nominee and Ravindra D. Kulkarni, V-C, University of Mumbai, is the nominee of the UGC. However, A. Sabu, member secretary, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, who was nominated by the university’s Senate to the committee, has declined to take up the job.

Academic sources, meanwhile, said that it was the government that used to issue such notifications earlier. The Chancellor’s office is now expected to forward the applications to the search-cum-selection committee.
