MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Sunday termed the depiction of poet Thiruvalluvar in saffron attire during a Thiruvalluvar Day event held at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai as “unpardonable misconduct”.

Speaking to reporters in Mayiladuthurai after paying homage to veteran Left leader and former State committee member of the Communist Party of India R. Idumbayan, 79, at Pattamangalam village, Mr. Vaiko criticised Governor Rajendra Arlekar for paying floral tributes to a portrait of Thiruvalluvar portrayed in saffron robes.

Questioning the move, Mr. Vaiko alleged that the Governor had insulted the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu by portraying Thiruvalluvar in saffron attire. He described the act as “highly condemnable” and “unpardonable”.
