US Vice President JD Vance has expressed confidence that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran will hold, saying negotiations between American and Iranian officials in Switzerland are progressing positively.

Speaking to Fox News, Vance said senior US officials Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff had been engaged in talks with an Iranian delegation in Switzerland for several hours.

“I spoke to Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner this morning, and they report that negotiations are going well," Vance said.

Vance May Travel To Switzerland

The Vice President indicated that he could soon join the American negotiating team as discussions continue.

“I expect to join the US delegation in Switzerland in the next couple of days," he said.

The negotiations come as Washington and Tehran work to implement the recently announced memorandum of understanding aimed at reducing tensions and establishing a broader framework for future engagement.

Confident On Ceasefire

Vance said he remained optimistic that the ceasefire would continue to hold despite concerns from some observers.

“I am very confident we can maintain the ceasefire," he said.

The Vice President also pointed to the continued movement of global energy supplies, noting that approximately 16 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday.

The strategic waterway is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints and has been closely monitored since tensions in the region escalated.

Responds To Republican Criticism

Vance also pushed back against criticism from Republican Senator Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, regarding the terms of the agreement with Iran.

“He’s wrong on this because he actually misstates the sequencing of what the MOU says," Vance said.

According to the Vice President, the memorandum does not immediately provide benefits to Iran but links potential economic incentives to sustained compliance.

“What the MOU says is that if the Iranians behave over a long period of time, they could get some of the benefits from this bargain," he said.

The remarks underscore the Biden administration’s effort to reassure critics that any economic relief for Iran will depend on long-term adherence to the agreement and changes in Tehran’s behaviour.
