Venezuela Earthquake Today News Live Updates: A strong earthquake struck off Venezuela’s northern coast on Thursday, causing buildings to collapse in the capital city of Caracas. The epicentre was located about 28 kilometres northwest of Montalbán, an area home to some of the country’s largest oil refineries.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the main quake registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.5. It was preceded by a magnitude 7.2 foreshock that hit the region just 40 seconds earlier.
The tremors prompted frightened residents to rush out of buildings with family members and pets before assembling in the streets.
The US Tsunami Warning Centres later said there is no tsunami threat, withdrawing an earlier advisory that had warned of potentially dangerous waves affecting areas such as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
