Venus Williams made a graceful exit from the US Open on Tuesday, showcasing a commendable performance in her women’s doubles quarterfinal loss, once again capturing attention with her style and substance on the court.
At 45 years old, Williams defied age by returning to tennis this year, becoming the oldest WTA singles match winner since 2004 in July. Her matches in the women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles were must-watch events at Flushing Meadows.
Her on-court fashion choices received widespread acclaim from publications like Vogue and InStyle, a testament to her lasting impact on tennis fashion more than 25 years after she and her sister Serena revolutionized it.
“For me, what you wear is just a reflection of who you are and being able to express myself on the court," said Williams, who, along with her Canadian partner Leylah Fernandez, lost to Australian Open champions Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend 6-1, 6-2 on Tuesday.
“It’s a lot of fun when you wear something you feel good in."
Williams wore a pleated-and-collared, all-white kit for her singles first-round match, paying homage to trailblazer Althea Gibson. Her valiant performance in the three-set defeat to 11th seed Karolina Muchova also earned high praise.
In the women’s doubles, she sported a mesh-layered kit with an embellished trim, followed by a dress reportedly custom-designed by high-fashion brand Pucci.
Earlier this year, she bridged the tennis and fashion worlds by being the first to wear Lacoste on the red carpet at the iconic Met Gala.
“It doesn’t matter what that is, as long as you feel good in it. So I got to do that," Williams said. “If it was fashionable, thank you for that."
The attention-grabbing outfits underscore the belief that fashion is essential for growing the sport.
“Fashion helps bring just casual fans to the sport, a new demographic," said 2023 champion Coco Gauff, who lost in the fourth round to four-time major winner Naomi Osaka.
Gauff, 21, and her longtime sponsor New Balance collaborated with high-fashion brand Miu Miu on specialty kits worn earlier this year in Rome, Berlin, and Cincinnati, marking another high-profile partnership.
Gauff credited Serena Williams for advancing tennis fashion.
“Now brands are having more than just one kit for their roster of athletes. When I was going to the U.S. Open (to watch, as a child), it was kind of looking like a cheerleading squad, everybody in one kit," she said.
Osaka’s glittery, purple Nike kit was meticulously planned, the four-time major winner revealed, with fittings “months and months" before the tournament.
“It always makes me excited for what’s coming up that people don’t know about," said Osaka, who accessorized her ensembles with a series of bejeweled Labubus on her racket bag.
“That just kind of makes me excited to obviously do well so I can have a good court to wear these outfits on."
