Venus Williams is set to make her long-awaited return to professional tennis after accepting a wild-card entry into this month’s DC Open — her first tournament appearance in over a year.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion, who turned 45 in June, has been listed as “inactive" on the WTA Tour’s website since her last official match at the 2024 Miami Open.

“There’s something truly special about D.C.: the energy, the fans, the history," Williams said in a statement released Friday by tournament organizers. “This city has always shown me so much love, and I can’t wait to compete there again."

Williams previously played at the DC Open in 2022 and will return to the hard-court event, which kicks off with qualifying next weekend.

In February, Williams was initially announced to be returning at Indian Wells, but that appearance was later canceled, with organizers clarifying that her comeback would not take place at the event.

Recent Grand Slam history and career accolades

Williams’ last Grand Slam appearances came in 2023, when she exited in the opening rounds of both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. At Wimbledon, she suffered a fall during the first set and injured her right knee.

Throughout her storied career, Venus has won five Wimbledon singles titles (2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008) and two U.S. Open titles (2000, 2001).

Alongside her younger sister Serena Williams — whose last professional appearance came at the 2022 U.S. Open — she also captured 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and four Olympic gold medals.

In 2011, Williams revealed she had been diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease that causes fatigue and joint pain. Despite the challenges posed by the condition, she has continued to be an enduring figure in the sport, celebrated for her resilience and longevity.
