US President Donald Trump declared a sweeping victory for his administration following a major Supreme Court decision that sharply limited the power of federal judges to block executive actions. Donald Trump said, in a jubilant appearance at the White House briefing room, “Big one, wasn’t it? This was a big decision."

Calling it an “amazing decision", Donald Trump described the ruling as a triumph for “the Constitution, the separation of powers and the rule of law." The 6-3 ruling by the US Supreme Court arose from Donald Trump’s controversial executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for children born on American soil to undocumented or non-resident parents. While the judges did not directly rule on the constitutionality of that order, the broader decision delivered a significant blow to the use of nationwide injunctions- a legal tool that has repeatedly stalled Trump’s agenda since his first day in office.

Donald Trump, who has long accused the judiciary of thwarting his policies through what he calls “judicial overreach" welcomed the ruling as a green light to move forward with his executive agenda.

“This decision reinforces that our country is governed by the Constitution- not by individual judges seeking to impose their personal views on the entire nation," Donald Trump said.

Donald Trump struck a celebratory tone, saying the ruling would “restore the rightful balance of power in our government." He said, “This is a great day for the rule of law."

What US Supreme Court Said

Writing for the majority, Justice Amy Coney Barrett said federal courts must stay within the limits of the authority granted by US Congress. “Federal courts do not exercise general oversight of the Executive Branch; they resolve cases and controversies consistent with the authority Congress has given them," Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote, adding, “When a court concludes that the Executive Branch has acted unlawfully, the answer is not for the court to exceed its power, too."

The ruling effectively restricts district court judges from issuing nationwide injunctions that block executive actions for the entire country while cases are still being litigated. Previously, judges in Maryland, Massachusetts and Washington state blocked Donald Trump’s birthright citizenship order using such injunctions.
