Video: Surat Teen Assaults Police During Liquor Seizure; Businessman Father Arrested

Two individuals, including prominent businessman Sameer Shah, were arrested in Surat earlier this week after liquor cans were recovered from a vehicle near a hotel, where a lavish birthday party was being held. Gujarat is a dry state, making the possession and consumption of alcohol illegal. The party, organised at KS Avtaar Hotel in Althan on Thursday, was in celebration of Sameer Shah’s birthday.

Teenager involved

As per reports, during the celebrations, Sameer Shah’s 19-year-old son was drinking alcohol with a few others inside a vehicle parked near the hotel. Police, acting on a tip-off, arrived at the scene and attempted to record the alcohol consumption. A video that has since gone viral shows the teenager shoving and manhandling policemen before being brought under control.

Sameer Shah reportedly arrived at the scene shortly after, attempting to pacify the police but allegedly threatening them with claims of having “connections at the top". Two women who arrived during the altercation reportedly requested the officers to release the teenager, arguing he was a minor.

Seizure of liquor

Authorities recovered nine cans of alcohol worth approximately Rs 1,350, seven mobile phones, cash, and the vehicle, which bore an “L" sticker indicating a learner’s licence. All items were seized as evidence.

Two cases have been registered – one for the recovery of liquor and the other related to the assault on police officers. The individual who supplied the alcohol has been arrested, and Sameer Shah was also taken into custody after it emerged that the delivery of liquor occurred at his behest.

Medical examination of teenager

Reportedly Sameer Shah’s son did not pass a breath analyser test. His blood and urine samples have been sent for medical examination. He faces a separate case connected to the assault on police officers. Authorities are reviewing whether additional notices or arrests are necessary as the investigation continues.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion in the city, highlighting concerns over law and order as well as adherence to Gujarat’s prohibition laws.
