Parts of Maharashtra have been receiving heavy rain for the past week, especially after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the onset of southwest monsoon in the state on May 25. The weather department also said this is the earliest onset of the annual rainfall season over the state in 35 years.
The monsoon advanced into some more parts of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, entire Goa, parts of Maharashtra, the north Bay of Bengal, parts of Mizoram, parts of Manipur and Nagaland on Sunday, the IMD said.
Meanwhile, visuals on social media showed heavy waterlogging in some cities, including Mumbai and Pune, with locals struggling to make their way through the flooded streets.
Some rivers were also overflowing due to the heavy downpour, thus flooding nearby areas.
One of the videos, dated May 25, showed a heavily flooded Pune-Solapur highway, submerging a car, as another one passed by.
Another video of a nearby area, said to be nearly 100 km from Pune, showed a tractor making its way through a severely waterlogged street.
Meanwhile, an official notice by the Pune Divisional Information Office on Sunday night stated that the roads under the Public Works Subdivision were closed to traffic due to rain.
