Vijay declares himself TVK’s CM face for 2026 Tamil Nadu polls; hits out at Stalin over Karur stampede remarks

CHENNAI: In first public appearance after Karur stampede on September 27, TVK president Vijay used the special general council to reply to the Chief Minister’s October 15 Assembly speech, calling it "filled with malice” and driven by “grudge.” He said TVK maintained peace with families after the tragedy, but faced rumours and political attacks that would be answered through law and truth.Vijay cited the Supreme Court’s October 13 observations that media comments by senior police officers could create doubt about impartiality and fair investigation, and said the Chief Minister had forgotten how the state’s counsels struggled before the court.

He recalled the apex court’s questions on the single-judge order and on setting up an SIT without proper basis.

He added that public trust in the government had eroded and told the Chief Minister to keep ready the line, “We bow to the people’s verdict,” for 2026.On the electoral path, Vijay said the 2026 Assembly polls would be a two-party contest — TVK versus DMK. He did not announce alliances or name a chief ministerial candidate in this speech. But a resolution was passed in the special general council meeting today confirming that Vijay will be the CM candidate and he alone will decide on the allianceHe further said current obstacles were temporary, TVK would not deviate from its journey, and urged supporters to stand with the people and stay confident about victory.
