Doctors at the Government General Hospital, Vijayawada, successfully treated a 48-year-old man suffering from a nasal mass that was causing blood-stained discharge, pus and nasal obstruction.

According to a press note from the hospital, the patient, Chinna krishnaya, a resident of Vavilala village in Thiruvuru mandal of Krishna district, had initially gone to corporate hospitals in Khammam and Vijayawada, where the family was told that the treatment would cost nearly ₹10 lakh. Unable to afford the expenses, he was brought to the Vijayawada GGH.

Detailed scans revealed a large tumour inside the nasal cavity. The patient required seven blood transfusions prior to surgery. With support from the Anaesthesiology department, the ENT team performed a lateral rhinotomy approach excision on August 6. Surgeons opened the facial region to access and remove the tumour, which measured nearly 8x5 cm, according to the note.

The operation was carried out successfully, and the patient recovered well during his stay in the ward. Histopathological examination later confirmed that the mass was a rare neuroectodermal tumour. GGH superintendent A.V. Rao and principal A.Y. Rao congratulated and appreciated the doctors and nursing staff for their efforts in completing the surgery.
