Vineeth Sreenivasan says 'the success of Lokah gives all of us immense confidence’, 'Dulquer Salmaan took a huge risk and it was the same with Karma'

Vineeth Sreenivasan, one of Malayalam cinema’s most versatile talents, continues to juggle his roles as an actor, director, and singer with remarkable ease. Known for heartfelt films like Hridayam and Thira, Vineeth’s recent directorial project Karma underperformed at the box office.

Yet, his optimism remains intact. The filmmaker recently praised the phenomenal success of Dulquer Salmaan’s Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, which stars Kalyani Priyadarshan as Chandra.

Lokah’s success brings new hope

Vineeth is thrilled about the film’s success, not just as a colleague, but as a believer in Malayalam cinema’s growing potential. Speaking to OTT Play, he said, “The success of Lokah gives all of us immense confidence.” He elaborated that big successes like Lokah uplift the morale of filmmakers and investors alike.“These days, there’s no certainty that OTT deals will materialise, and naturally, producers are apprehensive about investing beyond a certain limit. But when films like this succeed, it restores faith among filmmakers who wish to push boundaries — especially when they have to convince producers to back such projects,” he added.

The need for stronger OTT support and global reach

The actor-director also emphasised the crucial role of streaming platforms in nurturing regional cinema.

“It’s important for OTT platforms to extend stronger support to Malayalam cinema,” he said. “That’s what would give producers the courage to attempt more diverse films. Without that backing, anyone making such movies is taking a major risk. Even with Lokah, Dulquer took a huge risk and it was the same with Karma.

Vineeth further pointed out the growing international exposure of Malayalam films, attributing part of it to the increasing migration of Malayalis to countries like the UK and Canada.

“Over the past five to six years, there’s been a noticeable rise in the migration of Malayalis to these countries, which has significantly boosted the reach of our films,” he shared. He added, “These audiences not only show up in theatres but also encourage their non-Malayali friends and colleagues abroad to experience these movies.”
