Nepal plunged into political chaos as Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned amid escalating Gen Z-led protests across Kathmandu and other parts of the country. Demonstrators targeted government offices, including Parliament and the Prime Minister’s Office, and set fire to the private residences of President Ram Chandra Poudel, Oli, and several former prime ministers.
The protests, sparked by a social media ban and allegations of rampant corruption, turned violent, leaving dozens injured and prompting the closure of Tribhuvan International Airport.
In his resignation letter, Oli, who began his fourth term in July last year, said he stepped down “to facilitate the solution to the problem and to help resolve it politically in accordance with the Constitution.”
Amid the unrest, the Nepal Army and senior security officials issued joint appeals urging restraint and dialogue as the only way to restore stability. The Army pledged to protect the country’s independence, sovereignty, and citizens’ lives and property while monitoring the Gen Z movement.
Safety advisory
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday issued a safety advisory for Indian citizens in Nepal amid the ongoing unrest. Indians in the country have been urged to remain indoors, avoid venturing onto the streets, and exercise heightened caution. The MEA also advised following local safety instructions issued by Nepalese authorities and staying updated through the Embassy of India in Kathmandu.
The advisory further recommended that Indian nationals defer any travel to Nepal until the situation stabilises.
