A post shared on X has gone viral after claiming that an Indian woman accused of shoplifting during a trip to Japan was not arrested and was instead let off with a warning out of “respect for India".

The post, shared on Saturday by user Muthukrishnan Dhandapani, who said he was part of the same tour group, narrated an alleged incident involving a woman who was reportedly caught stealing at a souvenir shop during the visit.

According to the post, the woman had allegedly been shoplifting from the beginning of the trip without the knowledge of others in the group. She was eventually caught at a tourist shop and immediately offered to pay for the items.

In our group, from the beginning one lady has been shoplifting. We were not aware of it. In one of the tourist souvenir shops, she was caught. She immediately offered to pay money. The user claimed that the shopkeeper rejected the offer, saying Japan is a “high trust society" where theft is rare, and added that what offended him more was the attempt to pay after being caught. The shopkeeper then reportedly informed the police.
