VISAKHAPATNAM: Two remand prisoners escaped from Chodavaram sub-jail in Anakapalli district on Friday after attacking jail's head-warder Veeraju with a hammer.The escaped prisoners have been identified as B Ramu, a property offender and Nakka Ravi Kumar, a panchayat secretary.
Ravi Kumar was arrested for siphoning off govt funds meant for pensioners.
As per the reports, the remand prisoners were near the kitchen preparing food when B Ramu took a hammer from head-warder's table and attacked him. Later, he took the main gate keys from Veeraju's pocket, unlocked the gate and escaped from the prison. Meanwhile, Nakka Ravi Kumar promised to catch Ramu and went in persuit of him but did not return. Both of them escaped by the time other staff got alerted. The head-warder, who suffered head injury, was admitted to govt hospital at Chodavaram for treatment and his condition is said to be stable. Based on a report from the sub-jail staff, the Chodavaram police have registered a case and formed a special team to nab them.
