Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy called out an emerging wave of racist rhetoric on the American far-right, condemning what he called the “race-obsessed fringe" after being dragged into an online tirade targeting prominent Indian-origin figures in US politics.

Vivek Ramaswamy’s remarks came in response to white supremacist influencer Nick Fuentes, who posted on X (formerly Twitter) that conservatives who criticize Democratic New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for being a foreigner should apply the same scrutiny to Vivek Ramaswamy and Usha Vance, the Indian-origin wife of Vice President JD Vance.

“Let’s be consistent," Nick Fuentes wrote following which Vivek Ramaswamy reposted the comment with a firm rebuttal, “It’s a shame to watch the race-obsessed fringe of the right try to outdo the race-obsessed woke left."

Rice-Eating Video Sparks Racist Posts Against Zohran Mamdani

A viral video of Zohran Mamdani eating rice and dal with his hands during an interview sparked backlash among right-wing commentators, including Congressman Brandon Gill, who posted, “Civilised people in America don’t eat like this. If you refuse to adopt Western customs, go back to the Third World."

The video triggered outrage across political lines as some on the right accused Zohran Mamdani of “performative" cultural pandering while others said the backlash itself reveals deep-rooted xenophobia in conservative circles.

Who Is Zohran Mamdani?

Zohran Mamdani, 33, a Muslim Indian-American and son of filmmaker Mira Nair, made history as the first Muslim to secure a major-party nomination for New York City mayor. As his campaign gains steam, calls from right-wing groups for a citizenship probe have intensified with former ICE chief Tom Homan even floating tougher enforcement for “sanctuary city" officials.
