VISAKHAPATNAM: Vizag and Vijayawada cities in Andhra Pradesh witnessed the maximum number of road accidents immediately after peak office hours between 6 pm and 9 pm as per the NCRB report on accidents and suicides in India 2023. Vizag city saw 1,293 road accidents in 2023 with 1,222 injuries and 322 fatalities. The city witnessed 245 accidents between 6 pm and 9 pm. Another 216 accidents took place between 3 pm and 6 pm. In comparison, 194 road crashes were reported between noon to 3 pm, 190 accidents between 9 am and noon, 179 road crashes between 6 am and 9 am and 152 accidents between 9 pm and midnight. Vijayawada city witnessed 1,522 road crashes in 2023 with 1,416 injuries and 373 fatalities.
The city witnessed 295 accidents between 6 pm and 9 pm. Another 236 accidents took place between noon and 3 pm. In comparison, 228 road crashes were reported between 3 pm and 6 pm, 226 accidents between 9 pm and midnight, 218 road crashes between 9 am and noon and 159 crashes between 6 am and 9 am. Overall, both the Vizag and Vijayawada cities reported around 20 per cent of the total road crashes between 6 pm and 9 pm in 2023. The police said they are analyzing the reasons behind the increasing road crashes between 6 pm and 9 pm to mitigate the accidents.
As per the road classification wise number of crashes, injuries and deaths in 2023, Vizag city witnessed 477 incidents with 440 injuries and 132 fatalities on national highways. Vijayawada city saw 675 accidents with 584 injuries and 198 fatalities on national highways. November, October and September were the worst months for Vizag city, witnessing 138, 124, and 118 road accidents respectively. May, January, and March were the worst months for Vijayawada city, witnessing 156, 139 and 133 road accidents respectively.Over-speeding and reckless overtaking combined with a section of new two-wheeler riders not following traffic norms are to be blamed for the most fatal accidents in both the cities. Over speeding was blamed in 1,058 accidents that alone led to 270 fatalities and injuries to 976 persons in Vizag city in 2023. In Vijayawada city also, over-speeding was responsible for 1,487 accidents that claimed 370 lives and injuries to 1,370.
