Wagamon has emerged as the favourite destination in Idukki district for tourists, even more than Munnar.
According to data available with the Idukki District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), more tourists visited Wagamon in seven months in 2025 than other destinations in Idukki. “During the January-July period in 2025, a total of 5,43,979 tourists visited Wagamon Meadows and 4,10,805 tourists visited Wagamon Adventure Park. During this period, 3,15,317 tourists visited the Munnar Botanical Garden and 66,159 tourists visited Mattuppetty in Munnar,” said Idukki DTPC secretary Jitheesh Jose.
“The DTPC is collecting the tourist arrival data from only two destinations in Munnar. Based on the DTPC data, now Wagamon is the most popular tourist destination in the district,” said the official.
“After the setting up of the cantilever glass bridge at Wagamon, the destination has witnessed an increase in the number of tourists,” Mr. Jose said.
According to Tourism department sources, tourists from various parts of the country enjoy the visit to the glass bridge.
The cantilever glass bridge, set up at Adventure Park at Kolahalamedu, near Wagamon, opened to tourists in September 2023.
Sources say hours-long traffic blocks witnessed in Munnar on weekends and holidays may be a reason for the tourists’ preference for Wagamon. “The easy and speedy access from Kottayam and Idukki is another reason for tourists choosing Wagamon,” said the source.
According to Tourism department officials, the number of tourists visiting the district has been increasing every year. “In 2023, a total of 29,22,043 tourists visited the district, and it increased to 33,86,012 in 2024. In the first seven months of 2025, nearly 20 lakh tourists visited the destinations under the DTPC in Idukki. From May 30, 2024 to the first week of October, 2024, the entry to the glass bridge was suspended due to adverse weather conditions. If the bridge was not closed during that period, tourist arrivals would still have increased,” said an official.
“The Tourism department is implementing several projects in various parts of the district to attract tourists. In May this year, the DTPC set up photo frames in seven major tourism destinations in Idukki to give tourists a chance to click photos,” said an official.
