A day after the body of a minor girl, who was allegedly raped and murdered in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, was recovered, the autopsy report has revealed the injuries to her private parts, bite marks on her body and severe head injury.
The report also revealed that water accumulated in her lungs and stomach as she was thrown into a pond after being subjected to the alleged torture, news agency PTI reported.
Autopsy Suggests Victim Was Alive When Dumped
On Sunday, police recovered the teen’s body from a pond near her home in the Baruipur area in the district, sparking outrage among locals. The enraged crowd ended up lynching a man on suspicion of his involvement in the incident. Soon after the matter came to light, police registered an FIR and launched a probe into the incident.
According to the autopsy report, the minor’s head also appeared to have been hit with a heavy object or struck against a hard surface.
Further, the postmortem report suggests the child was alive when she was thrown into the pond, as water was found in her lungs and stomach.
PTI, citing police, reported that she died due to excessive bleeding from a head injury and drowning. Police on Monday reportedly arrested the key accused in the case, following the earlier arrest of two others. Three additional persons had previously been detained for questioning in connection with the incident.
SIT Intensifies Probe
Earlier on Sunday, a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to investigate the case. Authorities have also registered four FIRs as part of the ongoing probe into the rape-murder and lynching incident
“The investigation is at a crucial stage. We are examining all evidence. The preliminary post-mortem findings are being corroborated with other material collected during the probe," the news agency quoted a senior police officer as saying.
Furthermore, investigators are examining CCTV footage from the area that allegedly shows four people taking the 12-year-old away. Police are also analysing the footage to identify the suspects and determine their role in the crime.
Amid mounting public outrage over the alleged rape and murder, prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita have been imposed in parts of Baruipur and nearby areas, with additional police personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also spoke to the girl’s father and assured him that those responsible would be arrested and brought to justice.
During the conversation, the father reportedly demanded capital punishment for the accused.
