Arsenal signed Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting for £55 million plus add-ons. He scored 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting and will wear the number 14 shirt.

Arsenal unveiled new signing Viktor Gyokeres ahead of their pre-season friendly game against Newcastle United in Singapore.

The Swedish striker signed with the London-based Premier League club from Sporting on a five-year contract.

“To come here to a club on Arsenal’s level, I think it’s going to help me perform even better with all the amazing players in this team. I’m really excited to get going," Gyokeres had said after the move.

Though financial details were not disclosed, British media reported that Arsenal agreed to an upfront fee of £55 million ($73.89 million) plus approximately £8 million in add-ons for the 27-year-old.

“We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club," coach Mikel Arteta had said in a club statement.

“The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves."

Signing a striker had been a priority for Arsenal during the close-season as Mikel Arteta aimed to strengthen a squad capable of winning the title after finishing runners-up in the last three Premier League seasons.

Arsenal lacked a natural number nine for much of last season, finishing 10 points behind champions Liverpool and scoring 17 fewer goals.

Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz alternated up front until injuries sidelined them in January and February, leaving midfielder Mikel Merino to step in during the final stages of the season.

Who Is Viktor Gyokeres?

Gyokeres joined Sporting from Coventry City for around £20 million in 2023. He has since scored 97 goals and registered 28 assists in 102 matches during his two seasons in Lisbon.

Gyokeres helped Sporting win the league and the Portuguese Cup last season, scoring 54 goals in 52 games in all competitions, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League.

The Sweden international, who had a brief spell at Brighton & Hove Albion, will wear the number 14 shirt and join the squad on their pre-season tour in Asia.

Gyokeres is Arsenal’s fifth signing of the close-season, following winger Noni Madueke, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, and midfielders Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi.
