After Josh Tongue cleaned up India’s last wicket in Prasidh Krishna, cameras cut to England captain Ben Stokes pulling off a gesture which piqued the interest of cricket fans. Stokes mimicked an eating motion which the commentators called feasting on tail-enders. After the gesture at Tongue, the skipper would high five the bowler as India were bowled out for 471 runs.

Former England bowler has now provided the meaning behind the gesture. “Eating rabbit pie. Getting the Tailenders out. Knocking over the lower order,” Broad posted on X.

In the match, Tongue helped England to breeze through the India lower order to skittle out the tourists for 471 in their first innings on day two of the first test at Headingley, after they had been seemingly cruising on 430-3 earlier on Saturday.

From a strong overnight position of 359-3, Rishabh Pant helped India to add runs in the morning session in thrilling style, before quick wickets — with India losing four for 24 runs before lunch — dragged England back into the match.

Wickets continued to tumble in the afternoon session as India failed to capitalised on their strong start. Having been seemingly in a hopeless situation, England now come to the crease with renewed hope.

Resuming the day on 359-3, India captain Shubman Gill quickly moved past his highest score in test cricket, and the second highest by a captain in their first test match away from home, supported by the flamboyant Pant.

Pant was sweeping and scooping to his heart’s content, often ending up on his knees, fittingly moving to his seventh test ton with another six into the crowd, celebrated with a forward somersault.

Gill too tried to up the ante but was caught on the boundary chasing another maximum by Josh Tongue for 147, Shoaib Bashir getting his first wicket having been the source of much of Pant’s joy.

Karun Nair, playing in his first test for India since 2017, did not last long as Ollie Pope took a stunning diving catch off the bowling of skipper Ben Stokes, with Nair departing after only four balls at the crease, without having troubled the score.

Pant eventually fell, trapped leg before wicket by Tongue for 134, before England’s Mister Reliable Stokes struck again from the final ball before lunch, removing Shardul Thakur — who managed just one run — to give home supporters renewed hope ahead of the afternoon session.
