Sanju Samson has been on a hot streak in the Kerala Cricket League since he was promoted as the opener for the Kochi Blue Tigers. After scoring only 13 off 22 deliveries against the Alleppey Ripples after batting at No. 6 on August 23, Samson roared back to form in the next match against the Aries Kollam Sailors when he slammed a blistering century while batting at the top of the order.

On Tuesday, Samson continued his form when he scored 13 runs off just 1 ball in the match against the Thrissur Titans. This happened in the 5th over by Sijomon Joseph when Samson slammed the 4th ball over the deep extra cover boundary. Much to the disappointment for Thrissur, the ball was adjudged a no ball and in the ensuing delivery Samson walloped it over deep extra cover for another six, thus mining 13 from just 1 legal delivery.

He would ultimately go on to score 89 runs in just 46 deliveries, guiding the Blue Tigers to a score of 188/7 in 20 overs. Ajinas K was the pick of the Titans bowlers taking 5 wickets for 30 runs, including he scalp of Samson.

Will Samson play as an opener in the Asia Cup?

With reports trickling in that Samson could lose his spot as the opener come the Asia cup due to the return of Shubman Gill in the T20I side as the vice-captain, the Kerala batter has shown in back to back innings that he is pretty adept at that spot. Since 2024, the 30-year-old has been an exceptional T20I opener for India. In just five innings against Bangladesh and South Africa, Samson hit three centuries. He ended last year as India’s top T20I batter, scoring 436 runs in 12 innings with an impressive average of 43.60 and a strike rate of 180.16.

But if rumours are to be believed with India having Abhishek Sharma and Gill available, Samson might have to bat a little lower down the order.
