Water supply to Majorda, Utorda, Chapora improved

Panaji: The drinking water department has told the Goa Human Rights Commission that it extended a 63mm diameter distribution line to areas in Majorda and Utorda, thereby reducing the length of service connections.

It said that after its intervention, there was no water shortage reported from these areas. It also replaced GI pipes with UPVC pipes to resolve the water issues faced by the people. The commission last year took suo motu cognisance of complaints of water shortage in Majorda, Calata, Chapora, Assagao and Anjuna and suggested measures to improve the water supply. The department said that Majorda and Utorda are located at the tail end of the distribution network and upon inspection, it noticed that some houses were facing acute water shortages due to the lengthy GI service connections, which were clogged. The department also laid a 110mm diameter PVC pipe from Verna to Gabriel Cruz Waddo, crossing the railway track, to improve supply to Gabriel Cruz Waddo East and West. It also made various modifications in the distribution network to improve water supply. The department told the commission that the work on the 5.6MLD water treatment plant and allied works in Siolim is in the final stages of completion and is likely to be completed by Dec.

Raw water and electricity supply arrangements are complete, but hydraulic testing of already laid pipelines and the laying of a portion of pipelines is pending due to a ban on road digging because of the ensuing monsoon. The department said that water supply to Chapora was regularised and improved by laying a new pipeline of larger diameter, and all existing service water connections were shifted to the new pipeline. After this, water supply improved from 2-2.5 hours on alternate days to 4-5 hours daily, the department told the commission. The provision of water to the line was made from the Assonora water treatment plant.
