State’s first-semester format begins for 6.6 lakh students, check important guidelines here

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) on Monday commenced the state’s first-ever semester-format Higher Secondary (Class 12) examinations. The first-semester exams are scheduled from September 8 to 22, 2025, and will be conducted across 2,106 centres in 23 districts, with 6.6 lakh students registered to appear. This year marks the first time that Higher Secondary examinations will be held in two phases – September and February – under the newly implemented semester system for classes 11 and 12.

Exam timings and conduct

Candidates should note the scheduled timings and rules for smooth exam conduct.

  • Regular exams will be conducted from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
  • Papers for music, visual arts, and vocational subjects will run until 11:45 a.m.
  • Candidates are not allowed to carry calculators, mobile phones, or any electronic devices into exam halls. Violation of this rule may result in cancellation of candidature.
  • Metal-detector checks will be conducted at all entry points.
  • During the 1 hour 15-minute test, candidates are not permitted to use washroom facilities.

Paper security measures

To prevent paper leaks, WBCHSE has introduced sealed non-transparent printed poly pouches for question paper packets. Two sets of question papers – Set 1 and Set 2 – have been prepared, with the second set reserved strictly for emergency situations, such as a paper leak.

Exam centres and safety

Here’s an overview of the security measures and arrangements at examination centres.

  • 122 centres have been marked as sensitive, with Malda district recording the highest number.
  • Security arrangements include CCTV surveillance at exam venues, supervisors’ residences, and main entry points.
  • To address rainy season challenges, exam papers and OMR sheets are being stored in facilities with no history of waterlogging. Authorities may shift exam centres in emergencies.

Student statistics

Among the total examinees, female students outnumber male students across all 23 districts. There are 818 main examination centres. Out of 342 specially-abled candidates, 212 will write exams with the assistance of scribes.

Exam format and anti-malpractice measures

The first-semester examinations will be entirely multiple-choice based. To ensure fairness, multiple question sets will be distributed inside exam halls, following models used in competitive exams like NEET-UG and JEE, so that adjacent candidates do not receive identical papers.

The WBCHSE had officially announced the adoption of the semester system in April 2025, marking a historic shift in the state’s school education structure. Students and parents are advised to follow all exam guidelines carefully to ensure smooth conduct(with IANS inputs)
