California Governor Gavin Newsom and US President Donald Trump
California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused the US Department of Justice of investigating him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, claiming the probe is politically motivated.Newsom alleged the investigation is linked to his criticism of President Donald Trump and speculation about a potential 2028 White House bid.In a video message posted on social media, Newsom said, "Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump’s hit list. He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us. They have not found a crime - they are simply trying to find one."
He alleged that investigators were 'digging through years and years of random documents' and using the process to search for wrongdoing, according to ABC News.He isn't coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President.
He hates that I consistently call him out. He is simply the most corrupt President in American history," Newsom alleged referring to President Trump.Jennifer Siebel Newsom is a documentary filmmaker and founder of The Representation Project, a nonprofit organisation focused on issues including gender representation and equality.Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure and longtime critic of Trump, said the investigation was part of what he described as a broader pattern of targeting political opponents.
He argued that he had become a target because of his criticism of Trump and his potential presidential ambitions.“Donald Trump isn’t just coming after me because of my mean tweets. He’s coming after me because I am considering running for President,” Newsom said.Newsom also accused Trump of targeting his family and appealed to leave his wife and family out of the personal vendetta."We have nothing to hide. Mr President, come after me. I am not going anywhere.
The country is watching," he said. The Justice Department has not publicly confirmed specific allegations against Newsom or his wife, and has not detailed the nature of any investigation. The dispute adds to the long-running political rivalry between Newsom and Trump, with the California governor among the Democratic figures frequently mentioned in discussions around the 2028 presidential race.
