The Chicago Blackhawks are mourning the death of Troy Murray, a beloved former player, a long-time NHL broadcaster, and a leader in the team's alumni community. As per reports, the legendary NHL figure passed away at the age of 63 on Saturday, March 7, 2026, following a long battle with cancer.
After his sudden demise, the Blackhawks family has shared a heartfelt tribute, as the entire community mourns the loss of their beloved “Muzz.” According to the NHL, Murray was selected in the third round (57th overall) of the 1980 NHL Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. Later, he quickly established himself as a key contributor in Chicago who became known for his leadership, defensive responsibility, and steady offensive production.

The Chicago Blackhawks paid an emotional tribute to former player and longtime broadcaster Troy Murray following his passing away on Saturday, honoring a legendary figure who served and remained deeply connected to the club for several years.
In a statement shared by team chairman and CEO Danny Wirtz, the organization expressed profound grief over the loss of Murray, affectionately known as “Muzz” within the Blackhawks community. Sharing the same on Twitter/X, Wirtz wrote, “The Chicago Blackhawks are deeply heartbroken today as we mourn the loss of Troy Murray, our beloved ‘Muzz,' and our love and support go out to his family.”He further wrote about how Troy was the epitome of a Blackhawk, and his incredible presence felt in every corner of our organization over the last 45 years.
The legendary player was admired by his teammates and our players. The CEO added that Murray always felt proud to connect generations of Blackhawks through his work with the Blackhawks Alumni Association.
Remembering his contribution, Writz further wrote, “He jumped at every call to support our local community with our Foundation. He never missed a chance to say ‘hello’ in our press box and always knew the perfect time for a joke just when someone around the office needed it most.”He added lastly in his obituary note, “During his long and hard battle with cancer, it was often said that Troy didn’t have any ‘give up’ in him. While our front office simply won’t be the same without him, we will carry that spirit forward every day in his honor. We’ll miss you, Troy.”It is to be noted that in 2021, Murray publicly shared his cancer diagnosis. Despite his acute illness, he continued working and engaging with the Blackhawks community with his strength, resilience, courage, and positivity. Troy Murray will be remembered by the NHL community not only for his contributions on the ice but also for his professionalism, humility, and dedication to the Chicago Blackhawks family and the broader hockey world.
