The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued fresh weather alerts for Mumbai, Thane, and nearby areas, warning of heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the weekend.

According to the IMD, Mumbai and Thane will remain under a yellow alert from 12 to 15 June due to the revival of monsoon currents. During this period, isolated heavy to very heavy showers are likely.

The situation is expected to intensify on 14 June, Saturday, when the alert level will rise to orange. Residents in Mumbai and Thane should prepare for intense rainfall, thunder, lightning, and wind speeds of 40–50 km/h, the weather department notified.

Meanwhile, Ratnagiri district has been placed under a red alert for Saturday, with a forecast of extremely heavy rain, violent storms, and strong winds.

The IMD noted that the rain is likely to begin in the southern Konkan districts—Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, and Raigad—before moving north towards Mumbai and Thane. The current weather across the western coast remains humid, with Santacruz and Colaba observatories reporting 77–81% humidity.

“The alerts are issued as the weather conditions are favourable for heavy rainfall activity. This is revival of monsoon and the conditions will remain for the next four to five days," said Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai.

Nair further added that while rain will be seen across the state, Konkan and Madhya Pradesh will feel the stronger impact due to the ongoing cyclonic circulation.

The monsoon arrived early in Mumbai this year, on 26 May, 16 days before the usual date. Although the city saw a strong start with heavy showers in late May, rainfall has been scattered since then.
