Weather Updates: Orange Alert In Several States, IMD Issues Advisory

IMD issued an orange alert for heavy rain in Northeast states, Kerala, Mahe, and parts of North and Central India. Strong winds and thunderstorms are also expected.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert as it predicted heavy rainfall in many states for Monday.

According to IMD, the Northeast, which is already reeling under heavy downpour and rain-induced landslide, is expected to experience more showers toady and for next few days. Northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places from afternoon to night on Monday. An orange alert has been sounded in these states.

While in southern region, Kerala and Mahe region, is witnessing heavy to very heavy rainfall. The rain activity has intensified due to the arrival of monsoon, bringing relief from the summer heat.

Several northern states including Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and western Uttar Pradesh are expected to witness strong winds gushing up to 60 kmph and thundersqualls.

While in other states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand, IMD predicted thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (up to 50 kmph). Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh region is expected to witness similar weather.

The weather department has sounded an alert for heavy rainfall in some areas of east Rajasthan, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.

Further, Gujarat, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu (including Puducherry and Karaikal) and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are expected to experience thunderstorms with lightning and mild gusty winds up to 30–40 kmph. West Rajasthan may also witness dust storms which is a common phenomena in the region before monsoon fully sets in.

In its advisory, the IMD has advised people to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed during heavy rain. It asked people to avoid travel, especially during severe weather. It said people can seek shelter away from trees and open fields. During severe rain activity people should unplug electrical and electronic appliances to avoid any sort of short circuit. It also asked people to monitor weather updates and be prepared to relocate to a safer location if conditions worsen.
