Kyiv stressed on China’s global influence and said it would welcome a "more active role" from Beijing in bringing peace to Ukraine

Ukraine on Monday appealed to China, one of Russia’s closest allies, to take a more proactive role in ending the ongoing war with Russia, as Russian President Vladimir Putin visits Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
In a statement, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry stressed on China’s global influence and said it would welcome a “more active role" from Beijing in bringing peace to Ukraine.
“Given the significant geopolitical role of the People’s Republic of China, we would welcome a more active role for Beijing in bringing peace to Ukraine based on respect for the UN Charter," the statement said.
The appeal came as Putin, attending the SCO summit in the Chinese city, defended Russia’s actions in Ukraine. He blamed the West for sparking the war, which has lasted over three years and caused tens of thousands of deaths.
Speaking in Tianjin, Putin claimed the 2013–14 pro-European protests in Kyiv, which removed a pro-Russian president from power, were in fact a coup supported by Western countries.
“This crisis was not triggered by Russia’s attack on Ukraine, but was a result of a coup in Ukraine, which was supported and provoked by the West," the Russian President noted.
Putin also pointed to the West’s efforts to bring Ukraine into NATO as a key reason for the conflict. “The second reason for the crisis is the West’s constant attempts to drag Ukraine into NATO," he added.
At the same summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also raised concerns about the war. In a meeting with Putin, he said, “The call of humanity is to end the conflict as soon as possible and find ways to bring permanent peace to the region."
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation includes China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. It is presented as a non-Western platform for cooperation and is seen as an alternative to traditional Western alliances.
