TMC won 215 seats and BJP 77 in 2021 West Bengal polls, TMC dominates Kolkata and South Bengal, BJP strong in North Bengal, western districts remain key swing areas

As West Bengal heads into another high-stakes electoral contest, power in the state is rarely decided by any single district. Instead, a handful of influential regional clusters collectively shape the final outcome — a pattern that was clearly evident in the 2021 Assembly elections.
In that election, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured a decisive victory with 215 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the principal challenger with 77 seats. Crucially, this mandate was built on strong regional performances rather than uniform statewide dominance.
Kolkata And South 24 Parganas: The Electoral Core
The Kolkata metropolitan region, along with North and South 24 Parganas, continues to form the political nucleus of West Bengal. With a dense mix of urban and semi-urban voters, this belt accounts for a significant share of Assembly seats and has consistently played a decisive role in shaping electoral outcomes.
In 2021, this region stood firmly behind the TMC, contributing heavily to its landslide victory. At its centre lies Bhabanipur — Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s political stronghold. After her high-profile defeat in Nandigram, Banerjee staged a comeback by winning the Bhabanipur bypoll with a record margin of 58,832 votes, polling over 84,700 votes.
South Bengal: TMC’s Stronghold
Beyond Kolkata, districts such as Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, Murshidabad, and Birbhum form a contiguous stretch across South Bengal where the TMC has maintained a strong organisational and electoral grip. These regions, characterised by a mix of rural and semi-urban populations, contribute a substantial number of seats and remain central to the party’s dominance.
North Bengal: BJP’s Growth Engine
In contrast, North Bengal has emerged as the BJP’s primary base in the state. Districts like Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Darjeeling witnessed significant gains for the party in 2021, accounting for a large share of its 77 seats. This region remains critical to the BJP’s expansion strategy in West Bengal.
Western Districts: The Swing Belt
The western districts — including Bankura, Purulia, and Jhargram — have increasingly turned into electoral battlegrounds. These areas saw notable shifts in voter preference in 2021, with the BJP making key inroads. Given their volatile voting patterns, even marginal swings here can significantly alter the overall result.
The Importance Of Close Contests
Another defining feature of the 2021 election was the high number of tightly contested seats. Around 35 constituencies were decided by margins of fewer than 5,000 votes, with some victories coming down to just a few dozen ballots.
Small Swings, Big Impact
These razor-thin margins underline the fragility of electoral dominance in West Bengal. Even minor shifts in voter preference across a limited number of seats could dramatically change the final tally.
West Bengal’s electoral landscape makes one thing clear: elections here are won region by region, not through broad statewide waves. While the TMC continues to rely on its stronghold in South Bengal and urban centres, the BJP’s strategy hinges on consolidating North Bengal and making deeper inroads into key swing districts.
